There’s something quietly radical about seeing IKEA kitchen cabinets reimagined in a commercial setting. Not as a compromise, but as a deliberate design choice.
At Duet, a boutique goods store in Kauai, that idea is brought to life with clarity and confidence by the design team at LA-based Studio Murnane. Offering a curated mix of apparel, housewares, linens, and tableware, the store reflects an aesthetic that feels elevated yet relaxed, drawing inspiration from old Hawaii and the romance of travel. Curated by the owner, Lisa Duet, the space fills a gap in the local market.
While Hawaii has no shortage of shops, few offer this level of curation, craftsmanship, and quality in one place. Lisa’s background in vacation rental property management through Stay Kauai played an important role in shaping the space. Constantly sourcing beautiful sheets, rugs, and thoughtful finishing details for the homes she oversees, she developed a strong point of view around materials and quality. Duet becomes a natural extension of that experience, translating a residential sensibility into a retail environment.
On an island like Kauai, access to trade resources is limited. Custom millwork comes with high costs and long lead times, making it difficult to execute a refined vision without compromise. The solution was to rethink the approach entirely. By using IKEA kitchen cabinets paired with Fronteriors fronts and custom elements, the Studio Murnane team was able to achieve the look and quality of bespoke cabinetry while working within practical constraints.

At the heart of the space is a run of cabinetry that feels anything but standard. Finished in a light oak tone with cane doors, the fronts bring a breathable, tactile quality that is perfectly suited to Kauai’s warm, humid climate. The material palette keeps the space feeling light and relaxed, while still grounded in craftsmanship.
What makes this project particularly compelling is the level of customization on the Fronteriors components. The designer pushed beyond the expected by introducing curved, wavy toe kicks along the base of the cabinetry. This subtle but deliberate detail transforms the entire elevation. It softens the linearity of the system and introduces a sense of movement that feels both playful and refined.

Functionally, the cabinetry plays a critical role in how the store operates. Without a dedicated back-of-house storage area, everything needed to be integrated into the main retail space. Storage for everyday essentials such as a printer, vacuum, and back stock is seamlessly concealed behind the fronts, allowing the store to remain calm, organized, and visually cohesive.
It is this balance of practicality and design clarity that defines the project. IKEA frameworks provide the structure, while Fronteriors fronts and custom options elevate the result into something far more considered. The outcome is a space that feels warm, intentional, and distinctly its own.
Duet is a reminder that great spaces are not defined by where they start, but by how they are imagined.
